UPSIDE OF STRESS, THE

You hear it all the time: stress causes heart disease; stress causes insomnia; stress is bad for you! But what if everything you thought you knew about stress was wrong? And what if changing your mind about stress could make you happier, healthier, and better able to reach your goals? Stanford psychologist and award-winning teacher Kelly McGonigal, PhD, offers a surprising new view of stress one that reveals the upside of stress, and shows us exactly how to capitalize on its benefits. Stress is not always harmful, and in many cases, makes us stronger, smarter, and happier. How you think about stress matters. Rather than trying to escape, avoid, or reduce stress, embracing stress may be the key to well-being. The Upside of Stress is the first book to bring together the most exciting research on resilience--the human capacity for stress-related growth--and mindset, which reveals the power of beliefs to shape reality. Readers will learn: - How to cultivate a mindset that helps you embrace stress. - How stress can give you the focus and energy to reach your goals. - How stress can help you connect with others and strengthen close relationships. - Why the brain is built to learn from stress, and how to increase your ability to learn from challenging experiences. - How to change the biology of your stress response to enhance your physical and emotional well-being. Following in the tradition of McGonigal's previous Avery book The Willpower Instinct, The Upside of Stress combines science, stories, and exercises into a practical guide that is both entertaining and life-changing. The Upside of Stress is not a guide to getting rid of stress, but a guide to getting better at stress, by understanding it, embracing it, and using it.

Handbook of Stress and the Brain Part 2: Stress: Integrative and Clinical Aspects, Volume 15, Part 2 (Techniques in the Behavioral and Neural Sciences)

Book DescriptionThe Handbook of Stress and the Brain focuses on the impact of stressful events on the functioning of the central nervous system; how stress affects molecular and cellular processes in the brain, and in turn, how these brain processes determine our perception of and reactivity to, stressful challenges - acutely and in the long-run. Written for a broad scientific audience, the Handbook comprehensively reviews key principles and facts to provide a clear overview of the interdisciplinary field of stress. The work aims to bring together the disciplines of neurobiology, physiology, immunology, psychology and psychiatry, to provide a reference source for both the non-clinical and clinical expert, as well as serving as an introductory text for novices in this field of scientific inquiry.Part 2 treats the complexity of short-term and long-term regulation of stress responsivity, the role of stress in psychiatric disorders as based on both preclinical and clinical evidence, andthe current status with regard to new therapeutic strategies targetting stress-related disorders.

Occupational stress of School teachers

The combination of the findings of number of studies revealed that the phenomenon of stress problem of teachers is widespread and is not restricted to a particular country and may have an impact on teachers as individuals, on the schools in which they work and on the pupils they teach. Unfortunately, previous studies did not look in to what teachers feel about their job. In addition, the study did not assess which biographical groups experienced occupational stress more. The objectives of the present study were to identify whether high school teachers experienced occupational stress, the sources of stress and to see if the level of stress is related to various biographical variables such as Gender, age and experience.

Impact of Stress Determinants on Job Satisfaction among Nursing Staff

In the recent years work has become more and more taxing and the stress induced escalates correspondingly. Combine that with a profession that breathes in illness and death, the marshes get murkier. This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of selected determinants of stress on the job satisfaction levels of the nursing staff. The target were the nurses of private hospitals in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. The stress determinants in the study were; Responsibility Pressures, Role Conflict, Job vs. Non-Job factors and Workload. The aim of this study is to highlight the problem areas which would allow the management to focus on improving the work conditions of the care-givers. Further, this area of study has a great potential for further research on other dimensions of stress with different sets of samples from the private to the public and across the geography of Pakistan.

The Upside: The 7 Strategies for Turning Big Threats into Growth Breakthroughs

Today, when your fortunes can literally change overnight, the new strategic imperative is making your moment of maximum risk your moment of maximum opportunity. In The Upside, Adrian Slywotzky provides bold and original ideas for growth breakthroughs as well as the practical tools to use Monday morning, such as•How to change the odds for your next major initiative and create potential industry breakthroughs, as Toyota did with its expanding universe of Prius vehicles. •Shape and exploit risk, don’t be shaped by it. Become a knowledge-intensive business and continuallyincrease the knowledge gap between yourself and rivals, as Coach and Tsutaya of Japan have convincingly done. •A category killer can’t kill what’s not in its category. When basketball legend Bill Russell faced a taller, stronger Wilt Chamberlain, he led the Celtics to victory by inventing a different game. The same thinking lets Target prosper in a Wal-Mart world—and can help you outcompete the “unbeatable” rival in your own industry. •When you come to a fork in the road—take it! Only a fraction of companies survive when industries experience technological or strategic transitions. To be a survivor, learn the secret that enabled Microsoft to weather the advent of the Internet—the art of the double bet. •Stuckinabusinessbox? Findthebiggerbox—and then the biggest. When growth stagnates, capture more of your customer’s dollars through demand innovation and big-box thinking, as companies from Continental AG and Ikea to Procter & Gamble have done. •Your competitors can also be your greatest enablers of profit. Stop competing yourself to death! The key is knowing when to compete and when to collaborate, as Apple has shown with its revolutionary approach to the music business. In the 1980s conventional wisdom was that you could have high quality or low cost, but not both—until Japanese makers of cars and electronics showed otherwise. Now, high quality and low cost are required just to enter the marketplace. Today, we face a similar paradox when it comes to risk and reward. Rather than shrink from the high risk so integral to the tumultuous global economy, Adrian Slywotzky shows how it can be your greatest source of growth and future reward.

Experimental and Simulation study for Stress Concentration Factor

Stress risers, geometric irregularities that break the uniformity of a material, cause a predictable increase in stress. The stress concentration, expressed as the maximum stress under loading divided by the nominal stress, can mathematically calculate the maximum stress for different loadings. The following exercise explores the effect of a hole in an uniform rectangular .When a uniaxial load is applied to the plate, the stress adjacent to the hole increases dramatically more than the area closest to the edge of hole. The design of experimental choose the various parameter like hole diameter, width of plate and thickness of the plate change in to the study of experiential. Experimentally stress concentration factor (SCF) find out by the data of experimental. As a second opinion, ANSYS was used to verify and visually render the stress concentrations over the surface of the plates. Experimental stress concentration factor compare with FEA stress concentration factor. Relation between stress concentration factors with stress intensity factor (SIF) by elliptical hole in ANSYS. STRESS CONCENTRATION NEAR DEFECTS IN HOMOGENEOUS AND COMPOUND BODIES

In engineering practice many constructions, buildings, or their parts contain stress concentrators such as cracks (cuts, slits), inclusions, patches, holes and angle points because of the conditions of production. During the exploitation of different constructions and their details, some of these concentrators can appear. Therefore, the analysis of stress state of massive bodies, containing the stress concentrators, and local stress fields, originated next to the concentrators, is the actual problem from the scientific and engineering points of view.In the present monograph, the problems of simultaneous interaction of different types of the stress concentrators with the massive deformable bodies are investigated. Many new contact and mixed problems are researched, the closed solutions are defined and the behavior of interaction of different concentrators is revealed. The solutions of non-standard mixed boundary value problems for plane and half-plane are obtained by the method of discrete singularities and orthogonal polynomials.
