Al-Akaider landfill is one of the hot environmental spots in Northern Jordan. It is located within the boundaries of Al-Mafraq Governorate at a distance of 27 km east of Irbid City and about 1 km from the Jordanian / Syrian border. Solid waste deposition in the landfill started in 1981 and it is intended to close the landfill in 2020. The landfill receives MSW with a quantity of 700 tones/day. Industrial wastewater from slaughterhouses, dairy industry, dyeing industry and chicken sludge are being disposed at special evaporation ponds at the site. The objectives of the study are to review the situation of the current landfilling practices at Al-Akaider landfill, identify and assess the environmental and health risks associated with Al-Akaider landfill and to recommend management options to minimize such risks. The work throughout this study is divided into two major categories; risk assessment of industrial wastewater ponds and leachate at Al-Akaider landfill site and risk assessment of gaseous emissions released from the landfill and their impacts on the neighboring communities and the surrounding environment.

This book covers the seismic vulnerability assessment of unreinforced brick masonry (URBM) buildings. A method for seismic vulnerability assessment, based on the experimental results of series of URBM walls, is developed. The method produced satisfactory results when compared with the results of full-scale URBM buildings tested at various laboratories. The proposed method , although developed for URBM buildings, can also be applied to other types of masonry if the properties required to quantify the seismic performance are experimentally determined. The proposed method is used to assess the seismic risk of URBM building stock of Northern Pakistan as a case study. Fragility curves for buildings stock are drawn to determine the probabilities of occurrence of various performance levels at various levels of ground shaking. It is found that the probability of occurrence of damages corresponding to various performance levels of single- and double- story buildings do not differ significantly. It is also concluded that unreinforced brick masonry, if properly constructed, can be safely used in localities placed in seismic zone 2b as recommended by uniform Building code (UBC-97) and below

ECC is a chronic, transmissible, infectious disease with a complex and multifactorial etiology. Factors attributed to the etiology of ECC include: excessive bottle feeding with sugar contained liquids; breast feeding on demand and/ or falling asleep while feeding; and nursing beyond recommended age for weaning. Other factors associated with ECC include genetic predisposition, parental education, nutritional, environmental, socio-economic, and parental style factors. This study was conducted to determine the association between ECC and oral hygiene, microbiological, BMI, dietary preference and genetic sensitivity levels to the bitter taste of 6-n-propylthiouracil.
