Real-Time Construction Project Performance Assessment practical risk assessment for project management Real-Time Construction Project Performance Assessment practical risk assessment for project management

Real-Time Construction Project Performance Assessment

Construction industry development depends on a deliberate effort to improve upon the performance of projects being implemented. This requires measuring the performance of key activities on projects using indicators that truly reflect the perspective of key stakeholders. Acknowledging the weaknesses in existing indicators, this book proposes a paradigm shift in both the existing measurement philosophy and the Approaches:(i) moving away from expecting “project autopsy reports” towards “project health reports” (ii) moving away from considering the outcomes of a project in terms of the success/failure dichotomy into project performance results in identifiable criteria and (iii) acknowledging the uniqueness of every project and the contingency factors which calls for contingency measures of assessment. A contingency-based assessment tool is designed which could be used to assess construction project performance throughout its life cycle, to identify the factors at play and which will provide the necessary information to facilitate project management decisions. The tool also documents all relevant events which are invaluable for learning and improvements on current and future projects

Risk Assessment of Ethnic Conflict Recurrence: The Case of Sri Lanka

A conflict in post cold war states is followed by one or more episodes. All those conflicts are different in nature and seek identical solution. Recurrence risk of such conflicts can be assessed with the supposition of similarity in them. This book reveals the generalized mechanism to deal with ethnic conflicts so that they don't emerge again. Ending 26 years long protracted conflict with unilateral military victory, Sri Lanka insinuates itself with the status of No War, No Peace. This book predicts to which side of this 50/50 chance, the beautiful island inclines in days to come. What is the probability of Tamil Tigers to reset war again? The book works as the peace guide not only for Sri Lanka but also for all those states who are facing or opt to face the devastating conflicts.

Health Risk Evaluation of Uniport Drinking-Water Framework, Nigeria

This research monograph assessed the physicochemical and bacteriological quality of the sampled drinking-water supply framework to detect the health risks that may arise thereof. It also employed a triangulated retrospective study to evaluate the health effect of the drinking-water supply consumption on the student population, and recommended effecient and sustainable management system to assure the short and long term health of the consumers. It revealed that 65% of the drinking-water supply sources were contaminated with faecal organisms. Thus are unfit for use in their native form. The understanding of water quality and its assessment, was poor among the sampled population. Indicating that majority of the consumers relied soly on physical appearance of drinking-water, in estimating domestic water quality. Students should be advised on simple steps that can be taken to rid water of contaminants. At the distribution level, it is recommended that the Framework for Safe Drinking-water (comprehensive risk assessment and risk management approach) proposed by the WHO be implemented in order to ensure the short term and long term health of the students of the University of Port Harcout.

Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Management practical risk assessment for project management Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Management practical risk assessment for project management

Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Management

During the past four decades from 1960 to 2000, Amargos, a small coastal community in Southern Chile, has experienced major structural transformations due to changing population size, development patterns, economic conditions and social characteristics. These social, economic and environmental changes altered the Amargos hazard landscape in profound ways, with more people living in high risk areas than ever before. Despite the series of changes, the community has demonstrated a profound capacity to adjust. Arguably, community leaders and planners worldwide can no longer underestimate or deny risk, as this impacts negatively on risk management. Ensuring livelihood security is an integral part of a sustainable approach to disaster mitigation. This book provides anchor for suggested guidelines and planning interventions for natural hazard planning. It emphasizes a developmental approach to risk management together with community participation in project planning and implementation, suitable for urban managers, planners, local government policymakers and disaster management professionals.

Flood Hydrology and Risk Assessment

Damodar River of India is popularized as ‘Sorrow of Bengal’ due to massive unpredictable destruction in the monsoonal floods, recorded since 1665.Taking three prime objectives of development: (1) flood control, (2) extensive irrigation and (3) power generation, Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) was established in 1948 as India’s first multipurpose river valley project on the Damodar River Basin. Four large dams, Durgapur barrage and Tenughat reservoir are built to tamp the flood prone Damodar River using the water resource in an integrated method. Carrying sixty years of legacy, the existing drainage and flood control system of DVC has aggravated a number of hydrogeomorphic problems especially in the lower segment of Damodar, viz., siltation of river bed and reservoirs, uncontrolled monsoonal stream flow, declining carrying capacity of lower course, drainage congestion, low-high magnitude annual floods, decay of palaeochannels etc. Highlighting the existing problems, this research work mainly tries to analyze the pre-dam and post-dam flood hydrology and risk assessment of Damodar River Basin which can be applied in the flood management strategies of West Bengal.
