Genre across Languages and Cultures

Revision with unchanged content. Traditional contrastive rhetoric research is often restricted to the textual level of analysis. By providing both a textual and contextual view of genre across languages and cultures, this book presents a framework for contrastive rhetoric research which moves beyond the text into the context of production and interpretation of the text. The book examines the textual patterning of Australian and Chinese commentaries and interpersonal and intertextual features of the texts, as well as considers possible contextual factors which might contribute to the formation of the newspaper commentaries in the two different languages and cultures. This analysis contributes towards answering the questions: How do writers in different languages and cultures position themselves in relation to the topics that they write about? How do they manipulate the topic and address their readers by the use of various linguistic strategies and devices? How do the roles of the press and opinion discourses mediate and influence constructions of the Chinese and English commentaries? How do discourses of terrorism in these two settings relate to textual and intertextual practices? The book is addressed to researchers in contrastive rhetoric and discourse research. It is also directed towards scholars in intercultural communication and translation.

Internal Movement Across Sign Languages genre across languages and cultures Internal Movement Across Sign Languages genre across languages and cultures

Internal Movement Across Sign Languages

To analyze internal movement, I developed an anatomical classification system based on combinations of possible joints and muscle contractions resulting in movement of the hand, which maintains its same absolute location in the signing space. Using this coding system, I mapped the frequency of internal movement types across a language''s set of internal movement signs. These results allowed me to speculate on the properties of the articulator that most readily allow sign languages to change or innovate. In addition, I looked at the prevalence of marked and unmarked hand configurations and how markedness correlates to their appearance within a given language. Overall, both language specific and universal trends emerge. Based on observations from the data, I propose a few universal tendencies: the Distal Joint Limitation, the Proximal Joint Preference, the Immobile Base Limitation, and the Internal Movement Weak Reduction. This thesis provides an alternative system of viewing internal movement, as well as a sign perspective for the phonetic diversity across languages.

Validity Issues In Translating Instruments AcrossLanguages and Cultures

Many researchers wrongly assume that validity is theproperty of an instrument, and that once validity hasbeen ''demonstrated'' no further analysis is requiredwhen it is used in a different research context. This work challenges that idea and seeks to remindresearchers that validity, the ''ne plus ultra'' of anyresearch, is a multi-layered process incorporatingboth statistical and judgmental evidence, that mustbe specifically accounted for in any empirical project.A Japanese translation of Bennett and Hammer''sIntercultural Development Inventory (version 1) wastested for content, concurrent, and consequentialvalidity following Messick''s (1998) framework inwhich these aspects of validity are seen tocontribute to an overarching judgment of constructvalidity. The validation analysis raised questionsabout whether results from a translated IDI, and byextension the stages of the Developmental Model ofIntercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) upon which it isbased, are transferable across languages and cultures. This work serves as a reminder that validity is acritical element, and that it must be an explicitlyaddressed, particularly in cross-cultural research.

Lexico-Semantic Contrast of Selected Jukun and English Semantic Fields

One long standing claim concerning the relationship between language and culture is that the structure of a language determines the way in which its speakers view the world. In the light of this, the question has been raised as to whether speakers of different languages do not naturally perceive the external world in different ways according to a kind of perceptual straitjacket provided by their languages. While relativism has recognized the extent to which languages are subject to variation, universalism has equally emphasized the extent to which all languages have certain common properties. The most famous position that one’s world view is determined by the structure of one’s language has triggered this work. We therefore take the contrary view of universalism which states that natural languages and cultures are so interrelated that it is possible to express in one language what can be expressed in any other human language. To support our position, we have examined data from both English and Jukun across eight semantic domains of: Colour, Kinship, Culinary terms, External Body Parts, Idiomatic expressions and proverbs, Spatial terms, Fauna and Flora as well as Food terms.

Indigenous Languages in the Secondary Curriculum in Bangladesh

The purpose of this study is to provide a rich description of the role of languages, especially indigenous languages in the secondary curriculum in Bangladesh. Through this research I seek to identify the role of mother languages in education. Bangladesh has a centrally designed curriculum that does not focus on minority languages. Though tribal languages are not included in both the intended and operational curriculum, it affects the classroom teaching practices as well as the tribal students’ life. As the instructional language is Bangla, the cultures, identities and past experiences of the tribal students are not valued in daily classroom learning activities. Drawing on an understanding of curriculum as a tool for the social control of knowledge, I show how the secondary language curriculum promotes social inequality by the intellectual domination of Bangla and English over less prestigious tribal languages by not including indigenous languages, culture and values.
