Carl Bacon R. Practical Risk-Adjusted Performance Measurement

A practitioner's guide to ex-post performance measurement techniques Risk within asset management firms has an undeserved reputation for being an overly complex, mathematical subject. This book simplifies the subject and demonstrates with practical examples that risk is perfectly straightforward and not as complicated as it might seem. Unlike most books written on portfolio risk, which generally focus on ex-ante risk from an academic perspective using complicated language and no worked examples, this book focuses on ex-post risk from a buy side, asset management, risk practitioners perspective, including a number of practical worked examples for risk measures and their interpretation.

Are Manager Characteristics Affecting the Performance of Hedge Funds?

The purpose of this thesis is to examine if and how the hedge fund manager’s background characteristics and strategy applied affect the fund’s performance, as measured by average monthly return, risk and risk-adjusted monthly return. This is done by collecting data on 41 different hedge fund managers in Sweden and then performing robust OLS regressions. Our main results are that applying a long-short equity strategy generates higher return, higher risk, and higher risk-adjusted return compared to the other strategies. Hedge fund managers with previous studies in business and economics generate lower return, take on less risk and generate lower risk-adjusted return. We find modest evidence of lower risk taking among former students of Lund University. Investing private funds in the hedge fund are found to have a negative impact on risk-adjusted return.

Estimating Cash Flow Basing On Adjusted Performance of a Business

This paper deals with estimating either the current or the future value of money using a risk, inflation and sensitivity adjusted cash flow. In most often, there exists high variation between the actual and the projected cash flow of a business firm and this had been set as a problem for long periods. The main cause of this variation is that the cash flow we use in valuation has not adjusted with future inflation, risk and sensitivity rates to suit it according to the business firm changeable transaction. Since a business firm which focused on economic profit concentrates on the net cash return on the invested capital, the projection of cash flow depends on a risk, inflation, sensitivity- adjusted performance rate, the rate at which the current economic profit growth from the previous. So that, the projected outgoing cash flow would be set with in the capacity and cash limit of the firm.

Performance measurement in the polder carl bacon r practical risk adjusted performance measurement Performance measurement in the polder carl bacon r practical risk adjusted performance measurement

Performance measurement in the polder

Trends of public accountability guide the introduction of performance measurement in municipal subsidy awarding of non-profit organizations in The Netherlands. Specific characteristics of this relation make that there are limitations on the application of existing performance measurement practices, which may cause a lack of essential stakeholder support. In this explorative case-study research, we analyze what key factors influence stakeholder support for performance measurement in the arts and culture-, housing association- and sport sector. Successively, we develop hybrid arrangements that increase the level of stakeholder support by varying, mitigating or conditioning the alternative values of the key factors. As well as the practical value of the hybrid arrangements, this research has its theoretical value in showing that the traditional ‘hard’ instrument of performance measurement transforms in ‘softer’ negotiated arrangements by the Dutch stakeholder-collecting Polder model.
